Core Pilates

"Building strength from the inside"

Why Pilates?

Pilates is named after its inventor, Joseph Pilates.  It offers a whole-body workout that challenges your body like no other exercise.  The system, when practiced regularly will improve your flexibility and strengthen and tone your muscles helping to build a strong healthy back, strong abdominal muscles and excellent posture.  Pilates balances the body and aims to coordinate the upper and lower muscle groups with the centre of the body.

The Pilates Principles

  • Concentration - the aim is to be able to fully focus on each movement with one movement flowing into the next bringing body and mind together.
  • Breath - correct breathing ensures a good flow of oxygen to the working muscles.  It also improves concentration and aids smooth and fluid movement.
  • Centering - in Pilates it is believed that all movement comes from a strong centre 'core'.  The body is designed to work as a complete unit and if you train to do this you will have a solid centre to create the physical power for each movement.
  • Relaxation - you will learn how to focus your mind on how your body feels.  By recognising any areas of tension you can work to release any stress and relax through the body.
  • Quality - correct alignment of the body is crucial when exercising and mastering the techniques of Pilates is the key to quality execution of the movements.
  • Flowing Movement - all Pilates exercises should be performed in continuous flowing way, aiming to achieve slow controlled movement
  • Awareness - you will learn your own body's strengths and weaknesses which, in turn, brings body awareness and control.
  • Stamina - Pilates strengthens the body preparing it for all daily activities.
